hanging upside down (invert) by your hands, with legs straddled. or, the act of getting into that position. this position is very common in the silks stuff i know-- i think the straddle makes turning upside-down slightly easier, and it's also dramatic looking, and a number of moves start this way.

things to note: on a single fabric (e.g. with the fabrics together), you will usually want the tail hanging in front of your torso and one thigh, passing under your shoulders on one side of your body or the other. in this position, we refer to the side of your body where the tail passes as the same side and the other side as the opposite side. the photo above shows this kind of straddle invert, with the "same side" being the right side.

a very small number of tricks involve straddle invert on single fabric with the tail passing straight down behind your butt and behind your back. usually when you get into this position it's because you have made a mistake; if you're doing it deliberately, make sure you know the difference.

with split silks, you will generally be hanging between the fabrics, with one tail passing in front of your thigh and behind your shoulder on the left and one passing in front of your thigh and behind your shoulder on the right.
